A polished concrete overlay is a layer of highly engineered cement that is poured over the existing concrete subfloor of a building. After curing, a concrete overlay is ground flat and polished in a process that is similar to installing polished concrete floors.
Concrete overlays are most often used when the existing concrete subfloor is too damaged or worn to be polished to the standard expected by the customer. Because they add thickness to the subfloor, they can also be used to match elevations across a space, such as grade adjusting for tile or a sidewalk.
A standard polished concrete overlay is between 3/8″ and 1/2″ in thickness. Factors such as aggregate content and subfloor levelness will impact the installed thickness of a concrete overlay.
